Intel May Lift 10.1-inch Panel Size Restriction With N550 Atom Availability
Intel Corp is famous for its thermally efficient Atom processor especially in the netbook market. And in order to eliminate the possibility of cannibalization into notebook segment utilizing its other processor and chipset families, the giant chipmaker has set the boundary of maximum panel resolution capped at 10.1-inch since day one. And good news now, if the rumor is true, it may have plan to remove such restriction in conjunction with the release of dual-core N550 Atom processor by Q3 this year.
The move could be due to few reasons. First, with more and more powerful Intel Atom processor (or its companion chipset) that could handle 1080p full HD (High Definition), it requires larger screen that can showcase its capability without limited by 10.1-inch resolution that stays merely at 1024 x 768 pixels. And even before N550 availability, Pine Trail and Broadcom CrystalHD combo is believed to be able to scale up the display panel size and resolutions, unlike its first generation Z5xx (codenamed Silverthorne) or N270 (codenamed Navy Pier) that being blamed for their inferior graphics and video decode performance. Secondly, its strong opponent, ARM based architecture are believed to have next generation smartbook that could potentially feature with relatively larger (more than 10.1-inch diagonal size) and so there is a need to prepare itself to stay competitively in this market space.
However, this doesn’t address the cannibalization of notebook sales and perhaps the giant chipmaker will come out with other differentiation factor to try avoiding such scenario either with different price point, form factor or others that could differentiate well from notebook category

MSI Conceptual Convertible Sketchbook Notebook Design
You may have seen some notebook designs with convertible dual screen and when the top screen being flipped, a touch screen on reversed side will surface that able to transform the whole notebook into tablet PC which could be flexible and useful for those that prefers to tap or touch on screen directly as a replacement of conventional hard keyboard. However, the recent prototype disclosed by MSI may slightly change this hybrid design and instead of rotating its LCD display, the new concept focuses on its keyboard base and by simply flipping the keyboard by 180-degree, users will able to utilize its trackpad which was hidden underneath in normal configuration.
Named as SketchBook, it is still in early concept definition stage but recently its physical design was disclosed by MSI and spotted at an event in Amsterdam. While it looks not much different from conventional notebook at first glance, but when its keyboard base was flipped over, a trackpad will appear and users can input or sketch anything using its bundled stylus, just like what can be done on a paper. The targeted market segment could be either professional artists (if the screen size is not a concern) or children educational purpose (if the pricing is affordable) or for those that prefers hand writing or sketching more than keyboard typing.
Since this is still in early conceptual phase so no pricing information yet and don’t expect it to reach consumer market soon. And one inconvenience that we realized is that unlike rotatable tablets that you can change the view without lifting the whole machine from your desk, the Sketchbook concept may require some extra effort in order to lift its keyboard base before ability to turn it.

Intel Potentially Delays USB 3.0 Feature in Its Chipsets Development till 2011
We keep on hearing about USB 3.0 certified products such as PointGrey’s HD Video camera module or Dane-Elec’s External HDD but if you have put high expectation for this next generation USB protocol to be widely adopted by PC industry soon, you may be disappointed to read this piece of latest news. According to reliable source, Intel Inc may potentially halt back its chipset development that supports USB 3.0 protocol until 2011, which is almost one year later from its original plan.
If this is confirmed, it will definitely influence the new USB standard adoption by PC industries since the host controller function will normally be integrated into chipsets directly just like existing USB 2.0, SATA (Serial ATA), PCI-Express lane and many more. Nevertheless, board makers can always design in a discrete component solution on the board if they see the needs for much high bandwidth support when more and more USB 3.0 compatible devices are available in the market. However, this is not cost and space optimized and potentially introduce additional burden to system BOM (Bill of Material) cost and eventually transferred to higher retail price that will be borne by consumer in order to own a USB 3.0 capable PC system before 2011.
No detailed information on why it was postponed or what is the strategy planning that the giant chipmaker plans, but it could be purelly due to prioritization of product development with focus shifted to much higher revenue aligned with the company goal.

Always Innovating Releases ARM Based Touch Book for Netbook Market
ARM based processors are doing quite well in dominating mobile phones market and now is on the way to capture some new market segments even in netbook or nettop market currently occupied by X86 based processors. You may have heard a lot of potential netbook designs using ARM solution, but this seems to be solid one with the news released from Always Innovating. Just recently, the company has just announced a new Touch Book that claimed to be the world’s first detachable netbook available for consumer markets.
The Touch book is featured with a revolutionary design and fresh outlook that able to differentiate from the rest of X86 based solutions. What make it so unique are its innovative design that can work as conventional netbook or a standalone tablet with a detachable keyboard further enhanced with operable touch screen interface. More importantly, it is powered with thermally efficient 600MHz OMAP3530 SoC (System-on-chip) from TI (Texas Instruments) that can prolong the battery life up to 10 hours while able to offer sufficient CPU cycles for processing. Apparently, it incorporates the advantages of smartphone design while able to add in relatively huge 8.9-inch touch screen with 1024 X 600 resolutions display for greater web browsing experience while on the move.
Regardless of all these great feature sets, the ARM based Touch book may have to stick back to Linux Operating System. Nevertheless, the final version of software stacks will include OpenOffice 3.1, Adobe Flash, Skype VOIP (Voice over IP) as well as famous 3D accelerometer based applications like those being deployed in Apple’s iPhone devices. Always Computing is ready to ship Touch Book to some early pre-order customers and at a retail price of $300 (tablet only) or $400 (full system), it is expected to capture some significant market shares that used to be dominated by Intel Atom based solutions.

Sony Admits Issues with NVIDIA Chips in VAIO PC
Sony has finally admitted the graphics issues related to Nvidia chip that is believed to be impacting its VAIO series PC
since last year. If you recall, Nvidia has officially acknowledged the defect due to its GPU (Graphics Processor unit) that being designed in most of the high end PC including Dell, HP and Apple, resulting in free repair and recall action from the manufacturers to calm down some of the end consumers.
However, Sony doesn’t seems to find any issue on its Vaio series after a thorough investigation together with Nvidia last year until the recent announcement. The potential defective graphics chips were believed to be built into 14 Sony Vaio laptop models and could cause graphics display issue, video distortion, blank screen and all sort of funny graphics related issues. The symptom occurrence will be more frequent if the system has been exposed to heat which is always a design challenge when trying to embed a powerful graphics chip into space constraint laptop casing. The root cause was confirmed by Nvidia to be due unreliable underfill material joining both the chip die to package that would crack overtime, which pose a serious reliability issue to end users.
No details on how many units were impacted but the Japanese company actually stated that only a small amount of computers were affected. Nevertheless, Sony will offer a free repair to those affected VAIO models up to four years since it was bought.

Netbook Market Continues to Be Strong Despite Economy Downturn
Netbook has been classified under sub entry level notebook category but with its attractive pricing and specification, it has emerged as a new market segment that manages to attract consumer for new machine refresh and bring more revenues to PC makers. Just recently, DisplaySearch, a famous research firm has just announced that the shipment for netbooks could potentially reach 32.7 million units by this year.
The total shipments are up by 11.1 percent compared to last year when taking all notebooks’ families into accounts, with netbook be the significant contribution out of all. And among the global shipment, netbooks are getting better response in emerging countries such as Latin America, Middle East, Europe and Africa due to its affordable pricing as compared to other geography area. Besides lower cost, a larger display size netbook at 12.1-inch also helps to boost the volume sales into consumer space since multimedia capabilities is indeed very important in netbook’s requirements nowadays.
Out of so many famous netbook makers, Acer is on the top of sales that takes most portion of the market share which supersedes Dell as the second largest computer sales after HP with the popularity of its netbook in total notebook market. If only concentrate on the netbook sales itself, Acer is expected to be topped up with 40 percent followed by Asustek at 30 percent and other manufacturers sharing the rest of the pie chart distribution.
Obviously, this is a great news considering the current economic situation but yet there are still very high demand to push more netbook units into market space.
